Troy Kilgore grew up in northern Indiana, but he has lived in Bloomington for nearly 30 years. He has been painting professionally for 11 years.
Troy has been making headlines this summer for his plein air painting skills. He won Best of Show at the 2014 Carmel on Canvas plein air competition and 1st Place at the 2014 New Harmony First Brush of Spring. He also won awards this year at the TC Steele Festival of Flowers Paint Out and The Gathering of Plein Air Artists in Noblesville.
Troy began painting with oils in 2002 and participated in his first plein air competition in 2005.
Troy's accolades aren't limited to plein air. He believes painting outdoors is essential to making larger studio paintings. In 2003 he turned part of his Bloomington home into an art studio. This is where he uses his outdoor field studies as reference for larger paintings. His studio paintings have won awards and been juried into many Hoosier exhibits.
After many years of teaching himself to paint, Troy is now passing his knowledge along to others. He teaches art workshops in both plein air and studio painting.
